Disability has a negative connotation that extends beyond its definition which includes impairments, activity limits and participation restrictions, Mr. Asiah Gerenga a resident of Kenya zone with an amputed leg together with his wife who is also disabled narrated to us how their being disabled has led to their children’s starvation after we had visited their home during our reach out to Arua city.

He notes that being vulnerable as parents has left less attention to their children since there both disabled and in that the children experience starvation as a result of them having restricted access to employment.

According to the LC1 chairperson Mr. Yanke Peter, Mr. Gerenga’s children left school even before the closure of all schools to work in the garden since their mother had got an attack on the legs and at back that couldn’t allow her to do any work whereby the children had to drop out of school to assist her with the garden work like, irrigating crops, digging and planting seeds in order to get what to feed on. He adds that when food gets done from the garden they plant again and in the process of waiting, their children turn into village beggars to get what to eat. This presents a serious situation in that both parents are disabled and unfortunately they don’t have any income generating source to care of their children.

In response to that, Proven Foundation together with its well-wishers worked with the community based social worker and the village LC1chairperson and reached out to this family with Food stuffs, soap and clothes

The ultimate goal will be improved welfare of these vulnerable children and their parents and also hope will be given to the family.

The Family appreciated Proven Foundation and noted that the outreach has been very effective to them in that it has improved on their welfare and hence improving on their livelihoods.

We therefore call upon more well-wishers and other Organizations to join proven foundation and give more support to this family with food and other general using items and also spread parental awareness to them of the evils of child labor to prevent disruption in children’s schooling.
